Meebo Forum Rules

I. Overview/purpose

i. Purpose

The primary purpose of this forum is for four reasons.

  • a. The support of users experiencing difficulties with meebo.
  • b. The suggestion of new features for meebo.
  • c. The posting of bugs\errors with meebo.
  • d. The discussion of any of the above.

ii. Overview

The forum is divided into four sections.

  • a. News: For the posting of updates about meebo and the discussion thereof.
  • b. General Discussion: For the discussion of features of meebo. This includes technical support for non-bug and non-feature request issues.
  • c. Features/Bugs: For the posting and discussion of feature requests and bug reports.
  • d. Off Topic: For any other topic not covered by the above forums.

iii. Moderation

This forum is moderated by a handful of individuals, which include the development team and members of the meebo community who have been chosen to be moderators. Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to direct them to a moderator. To prevent flaming and trolling, such difficulties should not be posted in the open forum.

II. Expectations

each forum goer is expected to abide by a certain degree of “nettiquette”

i. Knowledge

Each user is expected to know these rules. Ignorance of these rules is not an excuse for not following them.

  • a. These will be posted openly, and the time of update will also be available. If you see that the update is AFTER the last time you read them, give them another look-see.
  • b. Questions about updates and rules will happily be answered by members of the moderating staff.

ii. Common Sense

Please post in the appropriate forum. Each is properly labeled, and is further described above.

iii. Courtesy

Users are expected to respect each other’s cultures. Meebo users are ALL over the world, and while we do hope, because the majority of supporting users speak English, that an attempt will be made to make the language barrier as easy to jump as possible, users are expected to not look down on or discourage other users because of language\geographic\cultural differences.

iv. Religion Issues

Users are allowed to express their beliefs, but users are also expected to respect the beliefs of others. Debates are allowed so long as all involved parties are still comfortable and no one's rights are being infringed.

v. Foul Language

Users are expected to maintain a level of linguistic decency. I.E. No/little swearing, please.

vi. What You Have To Expect

Users are expected to receive constructive criticism openly in all areas of the forum.

III. Restrictions

i. Bumping Old Posts

The “bumping” of old threads simply to bring them to the top of the forum is not permitted.

ii. Double Posting

The posting twice in a row is not permitted. You are freely allowed to edit your post as much as you want on any non-locked thread. If no one else has posted yet, your edits are not in any way reflected in the post itself, meaning it won't say “Last edited by so-and-so at da-ta-da on the 4th of Febtober”.

iii. Spam Detail

Advertisement of sites for which you have a commercial, personal, or other interest in are not permitted. Discussions of the usage of certain sites are allowed. For example “Does anyone else like snarfu.com?” would be permitted, whereas “Check out snarfu.com” would not. Computer generated posts are not permitted. [Of course, if you're a computer, you're not reading this anyway.] Pornographic and obscene material are not permitted. Flaming (personal attacks) are not permitted. Trolling (specifically “pushing someone's buttons”, especially to drive them to break forum rules) is not permitted.

iv. Topicality

When posting a new topic, please ensure that the topic description is just that - descriptive. For example, “A Couple Questions” is a BAD thread title, whereas “Images on page not showing up” is better. Essentially, just state the main keywords of your post. It usually helps to compose your post first, and then derive a subject.

v. "Personal" Posts

If you're having serious personal problems, we're sorry, but we have to ask you to please keep them off the forum. There are much better outlets for this and frankly, posting here probably won't do much good. We certainly want you to be able to make friends and to feel welcome here, but please understand that any attention you might get from posting cries for help here won't do anything to help you get better. Online friends are great, but they can't always be there for you the way people in your real life can. We're not saying you can't post about things like “my grandmother died today and I'm really upset” or things like that. We want you to make friends here and be able to share what's on your mind. However, “cry for help” posts like “I'm so depressed, I'm going to kill myself tonight if I don't get any replies to this thread” and things in that dramatic vein aren't what we have in mind.

vi. Hate Speech / Trolling / Flaming

We don't promote hate here. Racism, homophobia, attacks against other forum members (specific or in general) and the like will not be tolerated, and will be dealt with harshly.

IV. Consequences

With any rules, there are consequences if such rules are not followed. It's not that we WANT to punish anyone, but in reality, break the rules and you're really punishing yourself. The TYPICAL situation would follow such as…

i. First Offence

The offender would receive a warning, with an explanation of what they did wrong, why it was wrong, what the moderator changed (if anything), and how to avoid the problem in the future.

ii. Second Offence

If it is deemed the offender did not recognize the importance stressed by the moderator with the first warning, another warning may be issued. However, it is very likely (especially depending on the severity of the offence) that the offender may be temporarily banned from the forums.

iii. Third Offence

If the offender continues to break the rules, he or she may receive another temporary ban or a permanent ban. All permanent bans will be thoroughly discussed before being enacted.

iv. Disclaimer

The moderating staff reserves the right to skip or repeat stages of discipline, as deemed appropriate or necessary.

V. Miscellaneous
