Meebo Rooms

Meebo Rooms is an interactive chat room service available to Meebo members and guests alike and was released in early May of 2007. Much of the development of Meebo Rooms was driven by the Meebo user community with users requesting a more enriching group chat experience after Meebo IM chat was launched.

What is different about Meebo Rooms from other chat room services out there is that it does not require room participants to have an account with any IM service (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, google Talk, etc). In fact, you do not even have to be a Meebo member to participate in the chat rooms as you can join in the conversations as a guest. Although, we highly encourage those who try out Meebo Rooms and enjoy it to start a Meebo account so that they can benefit from the other services that being a member provides. In addition, inside each Meebo Room is the option for participants to share media that can be found on the web with other chat room participants. Oftentimes, you will find a Meebo room displaying videos and images, playing music via mp3 player, or storing a url link to a website of interest. The media inside Meebo Rooms is often a topic of interest and can spark lively discussion on the subject at hand. Similar to the Meebo Me widget product, Meebo Rooms was released with the option to embed a chat room on an external website such as your myspace page or personal blog. Visitors to your website can join in the current discussions of a Meebo room by typing into the Meebo Room widget installed on your site. Placing a Meebo Room on your website is a simple and easy process. As you can see, participants of a Meebo Room can enjoy and access the experience from a variety of web locations.

1. Click on one of the featured meebo room choices in your navigation bar located at the bottom of the meebo page. The meebo room will load momentarily. The pictures are not advertisements but are actually rooms you can visit if the topic of the room appeals to you.

2. Select a new nickname for others to see if you are a guest. You can also change your nickname if you are a meebo user by right clicking on your screen name in the room and selecting Set Nickname

3. Start typing in a message inside the chat room or clicking on a media in the queue to view if there are media available inside a room.

Just enter your search term into the search box, and you will find all the related Meebo Rooms. Wanna chat about High School Musical? Just enter “high school musical” into the “find more rooms” search box at the bottom of your meebo page!

You can access what featured rooms are currently available by visiting Featured Meebo Rooms. Meebo users can sign in to their account after they have visited a meebo room from this web address.

Users can create a Meebo Room from within their meebo user page or from the web address Meebo rooms creation.

Be sure to sign in with your meebo user id before creating a meebo room otherwise you will not be able to change the configuration of the room after you have logged off of the meebo session that the room is created in. For guests of meebo, creating a meebo id is a very simple and quick process.

1. Click on the Create a new room link.

2. Type in a room name that is not already taken in the Room Name: field.

3. Optional: Type in a description for your room in the Description field.

4. Optional: Type in some words for your room in the Tags: field that are related to the topic of your room to make it easier for visitors to search for your room in Meebo.

5. Optional: Choose a room icon from the icon template or upload a custom icon of your own by clicking on the Upload Your Own Icon and loading one from your computer. The icon should be square like in width and height and the file size should be less than 80kb.

6. Optional: For the Sharing setting, you can choose to allow anyone to add media or lock the room so only the room creators/moderators can by selecting the toggle value.

7. Optional: For the Privacy setting, you can choose to make the room password protected where visitors of the room will have to enter in a password to enter the room.

Note: Meebo rooms that are created with the Privacy: setting set to the value Private (Password protected) will not have the embed room option available. And if you decide to make your private room public because you want to embed it on your site, we currently don't have that ability. You would have to create a new room, and start off with it being PUBLIC in order to see the embed code.

8. Click on the Create New Room button to complete the room creation.

The steps are very similar to room creation from within www.meebo.com.

Meebo Room Creators are automatically enrolled as members of the rooms they create. Their screen names will be listed under the Members section of the visitor's list inside the room.

A meebo room creator/moderator has the right to ban a user from a room.

1. Right click on the user in question from the visitor's list.
2. Select the Ban command from the list of choices from the drop down contextual menu that appears.

There is currently no method available to un-ban a user. Be very careful not to jokingly ban a friend from a room you created.

2. Then it is automatically added to your Buddylist under “Meebo Rooms”

*You must have signed up for a meebo account to become a member of a meebo room.

Users can access past chat logs of meebo rooms that have been made public.

To access a chat log for a specific meebo room access the url http://chatlogs.meebo.com/room/roomname/logs/ where “roomname” is the name of the meebo room.

For example, to access the chat logs for the meebo room located at http://www.meebo.com/room/popsugar/, please type http://chatlogs.meebo.com/room/popsugar/logs.

NOTE: There currently is no way to delete chat logs in a room.

1. Visit the room in meebo which you would like to create a room widget for.

2. Locate and select the “Embed on your site” button.

3. Choose a size option. The dimensions are in pixels and currently there are four options to choose from. These options are:

- sidebar (210 X 350) - without media player (430 X 300) - with media player (550 X 415) - customize ( ### X ###)

4. Copy the code that is generated in the Embed field and store it in a text based file on your computer.

5. Close the Embed on your Site dialog.

You can now paste this widget code on an external website. The following is a small sample of the web sites where you can place a meebo room widget.

1. Login to your www.myspace.com page.

2. Click 'Edit Profile'
