This wiki page contains frequently asked questions and information we hope that will help troubleshoot issues you are having with meebo.
Some issues can be resolved by clearing your browser cache and then refreshing the meebo page. Try that as the first step in troubleshooting.

Is Meebo free to use?

Yes, it is free to use meebo.

How do I change my email address associated with my meebo account?

  1. Log into meebo with your meebo account
  2. Click on preferences at the top of your meebo page
  3. Select account settings
  4. Enter your new email address
  5. Enter your current password and click on Submit

How do I change my password for my meebo account?

  1. Log into meebo with your meebo account
  2. Click on preferences at the top of your meebo page
  3. Select account settings
  4. Enter your new password
  5. Confirm your new password by entering it into the confirm password text box
    Note: If your new password and confirm password do not match, the confirm password text box will display with a red border. Re-enter your new password again and re-confirm your password.
  6. Enter your current password and click on Submit

Is there an option to log into meebo automatically when I open my browser?

The meebo-firefox extension has this capability. http://www.meebo.com/firefox/ After installing the meebo-firefox sidebar, open up the sidebar and check option to ‘automatically sign on to meebo when Firefox starts’ and enter your meebo account info. The sidebar also provides visual pop-up notification when your buddies logs on/off and when you receive IM messages.

How do I turn off the blog pop-up that appears when I log in?

There is no option to turn it off at this time.


Connection Issues

I don't have the option to SMS through AIM

That capability was disabled because of some issues we have run into. We are working with AOL on the problem and hope to have it resolved very soon! Sorry for any inconvenience.

I keep getting logged out of my IM account

If you sign in through meebo and frequently get disconnected on one of your IMs (yahoo, msn, etc.), make sure you aren't signing in from anywhere else including mobile devices. Some mobile devices have built-in IM and might be auto-logging you in!

Try clearing your cache and refreshing your page. If you don’t know how to clear your cache please go to our wiki for instructions.

Once you've cleared your cache, go to www.meebo.com and hold down the ctrl key and F5 function key simultaneously. This will force the browser to load the most current meebo source with the latest updates. If you are using Firefox though, all you need to do is press the blue circular arrow at the top of the browser page (Reload Current Page).

I can’t sign into meebo

If you're unable to sign in to meebo it can mean a number of different things. Please check the following:

1. Check your network connection.

2. Make sure your username and password for the particular network you’re accessing are correct and match.

3. You may have logged into a network and not been properly logged out…wait about 5-10 minutes and try again.

4. Try using another browser.

I can’t get the meebo web site to load properly

1. You may be behind a firewall that’s interfering with your access to meebo.
Try https://www.meebo.com.

2. You may be using a web browser that meebo doesn’t yet support. We recommend Firefox 2.0 and Internet Explorer 7

3. Your JavaScript may not have been enabled on for your browser. Go into the browser internet options to enable JavaScript.

4. Make sure you are running a current version of Flash player 9 or higher.

Using IE7, get message 'Javascript required to signin'

JavaScript for the browser may not have been enabled.
To enable it, from IE7 menu bar:

  1. click on Tools
  2. Internet Options
  3. Security
  4. Custom level… (near lower half of window)
  5. find 'active scripting' (near the end of the list)
  6. check 'Enable'
  7. click 'OK', then 'Yes', then 'OK'
  8. restart the browser

When adding ICQ account, it shows up as an AIM account

When adding your ICQ account to your meebo account, use your ICQ number as the account id.

I have msn accounts, but it's not hotmail, it's @msn.com and @live.com

You can add both @msn.com and @live.com accounts to meebo. You should be able to enter the entire account address ‘xxxxx@msn.com' or 'xxxxx@live.com' into the screen name field when adding the msn accounts.


Double-check the password if it doesn't work the first time.

I keep getting disconnected from meebo

1. meebo is relatively sensitive to the up-time of your internet connection. If you’re on a spotty connection, particularly over wireless, you may have trouble staying connected to meebo.

2. Some folks report that their connection is usually fine, but randomly they’re getting logged off a lot on a given day. This is usually because your internet connection has become spotty on that particular day, and should self-correct in a day or so once your service provider has fixed the connection.

Meebo can be especially sensitive to network disruptions even when other websites seem to work fine. meebo requires a constant connection between your computer and our servers – we’re constantly pinging back and forth to make sure the session is still alive. Performing bandwidth intensive activities on the computer or network such as downloading music as an example, will definitely affect the connection. We’ve done our best to make it as forgiving as possible, but on spottier internet connections, disconnections can happen more often than we’d like. Sometimes, there are just temporary problems that cause these disruptions and the problem will resolve itself. If it’s a more permanent problem, there’s less that we can do to fix it, but know that we’re constantly monitoring it to make sure we’re keeping the best balance. Can you do me a favor and clear your cache? If you don’t know how to clear your cache, please go to the following link for directions:

If you’re still running into the trouble even after clearing your browser’s cache and reloading the page, try using the IP address:

Some users say it works better if you go to https://www.meebo.com (note the S after http).

I can't log into my AIM account through meebo. Its says "Try Again! Please Check Your Name And Password". I know my account name & password is correct

I'm able to log into AIM Express and via the AIM client greater than version 5.9x with the same account information. What gives?

1. Wait a few minutes after the first attempt and try logging into meebo one more time with the correct user name and password.

2. Should this fail for aim accounts that were created several years ago, try resetting your password to all lowercase characters (letters & numbers) between (4-16 characters long). Instructions on how to reset the AIM password can be found here, or you can search for how to change your aim password on the web.

Can I log into Google Talk using my Google Apps domain?

Yes, absolutely, but you must configure DNS SRV records for your domain that point to talk.google.com. Here's an example of the SRV records you should configure:

There is more information about this in this article and on Google's help pages. You should only need the xmpp-client records to log in, but adding the xmpp-server records is required for a fully-functioning XMPP server.

I have a jabber server in the public domain that I would like to connect to via meebo

1. Go to http://www.meebo.com/
2. Click on “more networks” below Google Talk. There's an little green ICQ flower icons and a little yellow Jabber lightbulb icon.
3. In the Jabber field, enter your username as “whoever@yourjabberserver.com” and enter your password
4. Click “Sign On”

Note: We currently don't support specifying a separate connect server or port. If you need either of these things, please talk to your Jabber server administrator and configure DNS SRV records for the domain. There's a little information about how to do that in the question above this one.


Can I chat with dot mac users?

To connect to a dotMac account you just need to create an AIM account and use your username@mac.com and password.

Is there an auto-reconnect feature to reconnect the meebo session after network interruption?

Currently, for short network interruptions, the system will auto reconnect. Anything longer than about 2 minutes, you'll need to manually reconnect.

FB/MySpace

You can log into your Facebook and MySpace accounts on Meebo, and chat with your social network friends right next to your other IM buddies. If you have a question about IM on MySpace we haven't addressed here, please let us know by sending an email to support@meebo.com.

MySpace IM

Logging in

Enter in your MySpace IM email and password in the log in box on the Meebo homepage.

If you haven’t registered a username for MySpace IM you’ll receive a notification dialog when trying to log into Meebo.

Select the “Set your username on MySpace” link in the dialog. Next you’ll be taken to the MySpace site. Once you login to your MySpace account you’ll receive instructions to create your MySpace IM username.

Once the username is created, return to Meebo and enter the original MySpace email address to log into your account.

Adding MySpace IM to your Meebo Network

You can add your MySpace IM account to your Meebo IM network by:
1. Logging into your Meebo account
2. Select the “account” link at the top of the page
3. Choose “add account”
4. Choose Myspace from the drop down menu
5. Enter your MySpace email and password
6. Check the boxes that you want to apply to your account

  • Sign on as invisible
  • Add to my Meebo account
  • Connect on startup

If you have already signed into your Meebo account, choose the “sign on to more accounts” link under your Meebo networks on the left hand side of the screen.
1. Choose MySpace from the drop down menu
2. Enter your login details
3. Check the boxes that you want to apply to your account

  • Sign on as invisible
  • Add to my Meebo account
  • Connect on startup

Adding Buddies

To add a buddy to your MySpace IM network using Meebo:
1. Click the “Add buddy Icon” at the top of your Meebo buddy list
2. Choose the MySpace network
3. Click “Add a new buddy by email address or username”
4. Enter your buddy information
5. Choose a group
6. Click “add buddy”

Note: If your buddy does not already have a MySpace IM account, they will need to create one in order to chat with you on Meebo.

Sync

“Sync” will update Meebo with any new friends you’ve added to your MySpace account.
1. Click the “Add buddy Icon” at the top of your Meebo buddy list
2. Choose your MySpace network
3. Click “Sync”

Note: If your MySpace Friends have not created a MySpace IM user-name, they will appear offline.

Removing Buddies

To remove a MySpace IM buddy from your Meebo buddy list:
1. Right click on the buddy name
2. Choose “Remove”

Note: This will not remove the person from your MySpace account.

Status

To type a status message:
1. Click on “I’m available” at the top of your Meebo buddy list
2. Choose “Custom”
3. Enter you message.

Note: The message you enter will not display to all of your IM networks added to Meebo. Those network IMs that do not allow status message will display as Away.

Unfortunately, some of the things you can do in Meebo for other networks aren't yet supported for MySpace IM.

Buddy Issues

I can’t add buddies

1. If you’re using a meebo account and you want to add buddies from another network, make certain that you have added your other account to your meebo account. For example, if I have the meebo ID “Seth,” I also need to sign on to my account on AIM “Seth-AIM” (or whatever your user name is) in order to add AIM buddies.

I have signed into meebo, but my buddies are not appearing

There is an infrequent bug where the buddy list doesn’t come up upon login.
1. Log out of meebo
2. Clear your Cache 2. Refresh the meebo page by holding down the ctrl key and hitting F5 key
3. Log back into meebo If this doesn't help,

1. Click the accounts link at the top of the page 2. Remove the network protocol that isn't displaying your buddies 3. Click save

4. Log out of your account 5. Clear your Cacheagain 6. Refresh the meebo page by holding down the crtl key and hitting the F5 Key 7. Log back into your meebo account.

I have signed into meebo, but all or some of my buddies appear offline

If any of your buddies are signed in as invisible they would show in your offline group. And of course if they ARE offline, they would be in your offline group.

The other thing to keep in mind is that when you get an invite from a buddy, you get an option to DENY, ACCEPT or ACCEPT & ADD them. Of course if you deny, they won't show up on your buddy list. If you ACCEPT, you can chat with them, but then won't show up on your buddy list. You need to click ACCEPT & ADD so that they do appear on your buddy list in the future. If you hadn't done this, you should both remove each other from your buddy lists, and try it again, this time clicking ACCEPT & ADD.

I logged into my yahoo acct via meebo, but some of my buddies are missing. They have hotmail addresses.

Yahoo and Hotmail recently started sharing contacts. This is not yet support on meebo. If you want to see the buddies with the hotmail accounts, you will need to add your own hotmail account info to your meebo account. If you don’t have a meebo account and log into Yahoo directly from the meebo log in page, you can enter your hotmail account info on the login page as well before hitting the ‘sign on’ button.

How do I unblock a buddy

Currently, to unblock someone you need to add them to your buddy list again. After they accept, you will see their name grayed out with a blocked icon (o with a line across it). Just right click on the buddy and you will see option to unblock.

I have some buddy screen names appearing under meebo rooms or recent rooms group. How did it get that way?

The meebo rooms and recent rooms category section acts like other group categories in your buddy list where you can add your buddy screen names. In addition to meebo rooms, you can also add buddy screen names to the meebo rooms and recent rooms category. You may have inadvertently added the screen name of your buddy under the meebo rooms category when adding the screen name. When adding a buddy, make sure the entry value entered in the Group drop down menu is not meebo rooms or recent rooms.

For those meebo users that may already have buddy screen names in the meebo rooms or recent rooms category, you can move the buddies to other groups. The following example shows how to move Friend2 screen name from the recent rooms group category.

1. Right click on the buddy screen name you wish to move. A context menu will appear.

2. Select Remove [your buddy's screen name]

3. Add Buddy to new Group (see http://wiki.meebo.com/doku.php?id=usage:getting_started#the_interface on instructions to Add a buddy to buddy list)

What time zone is displayed when I hover the mouse over my buddy on the buddy list.

It should be the time zone of where your buddy is located.

I see html tags within one of my MSN buddies' screen name. Why?

Your buddy is using Messenger Plus! Live. Messenger Plus! Live is a 3rd party add-on for the Windows Messenger client. The official Windows Messenger client also sees the tags when interacting with Messenger Plus! Live users who have added formatting to their name. This is an issue with the 3rd party application.

A way to solve this is to rename your buddy.

  1. Right click on the buddy
  2. Select Rename
  3. Hit Enter key when done


Instant Messaging

I don't see a send button. How do I send my message?

There is no send button. Just click on the Enter key on your keyboard.

If I have an AOL account can I IM someone with a Yahoo account?

If you want to IM someone who has a Yahoo IM account, you will need to have a Yahoo account yourself and add your Yahoo account to your meebo account.

I have set my status in MSN to "Busy", but it shows me as "Away From Computer"?

Currently status messages for MSN are not supported. MSN will only display “away From Computer”

Which IM networks can I leave offline messages for buddies using meebo

Meebo supports offline messages for ICQ, Yahoo, Google Talk, and Jabber. MSN offline messages is currently not supported within meebo.

How do I change the font size for outgoing and incoming messages?

If you open up a chat window with a buddy and change the font size within the IM window, this setting will automatically be applied for all your outgoing IMs. Currently, there is no option to change the font size of incoming messages.

I unchecked save my history to view later. How come I still see my old chat logs?

If you un-check ‘save my im history to view later’, the conversations that takes place after un-checking this option will not be logged.
Previous chat logs will remain. If you don’t want the old chat logs anymore, you can delete it.

To delete a chat log:

  1. Right click on the buddy you want delete chat logs for, then click View Chat Log.
  2. Click on the X Delete All at the left corner of the chat log window. This will delete the entire chat conversations with that buddy.

My buddy who doesn't use meebo, don't see the emoticons I send. They see text instead.

Our emoticons are designed to work within meebo. If other users aren’t using meebo and doesn’t have an emoticon assigned to the shortcut, they will just the text or they will see the images that their IM network associates with the text. For example, “:D” and “:)” will appear as images on Yahoo whereas the pirate, “P)”, will appear as text.

We definitely have on our list to work on integrating emoticons with our supported IM networks.

How can I display my ICQ screen name instead of my ICQ number for my ICQ account?

Currently, with ICQ it's not possible to display the screen name for your ICQ account.

Chat Logs

I don't see the 'Save my IM History to View Later' within preferences.

You need to log into meebo with a meebo account in order to have chat log preferences.

How do I view the chat logs for my group chat?

Chat logs for group chats are not available at this time.

I can't view my chat logs or get an error message when I try, even though I was able to before.

If you're having problems viewing your chat logs, please try the following:

1 It may be necessary to clear your cacheand refresh your page. 2. If your chat logs are very large, Firefox users may not be able to access them. try using Internet Explorer or Safari. 3. If you're still having a problem please contact Comments@meebo.com

Sound Issues

I can't see the speaker icon on my meebo page

Make sure you have at least Flash version 6 installed for your internet browser. After installing the flash player, try logging back on to meebo to check if the speaker icon appears.

I can't hear any sound when I receive messages

  1. Make sure sound options are selected within preferences. At the top of your meebo page, click preferences, then IM Settings. Make sure options for Play a sound are selected.
  2. At the top of your meebo page, make sure the speaker icon is on. If you see an 'x' click on it to turn it on.
  3. Make sure you have flash player installed.
  4. If flashblock is installed, make sure meebo is on its exception list.
  5. If you are behind a firewall, that can block almost all sound and video files. Try logging in through https://www.meebo.com (note the S after http).


Language Interface

I'm seeing a different language displayed when I log in

There was probably an inadvertent selection of another language during the sign on process to meebo.

1. When you visit the meebo sign on page at http://www.meebo.com, scroll all the way down the page. In the example below, you'll see the word Italiano with an arrow to the right of it, and some of the words showing up in Italian:



2. Click on the arrow just to the right of Italiano and select English as shown below:



3. You'll notice that those Italian words are now in English. Now when you log into your meebo or IM account, you will be in the language you want to be in!

Chatting in Russian using ICQ network, sometimes see gibberish

Unfortunately, ICQ isn't the best about using non-ASCII characters. The standard English alphabet is pretty universal in the computer world. There generally aren't problems with it, but when you start using characters that aren't used in English you can run into problems. Basically when you transmit some letters over the network, some letters can be encoded in more than one way, like Russian and Chinese characters, for example. So when you have two people talking to each other using an instant messenger, it's important that the two instant messaging programs use the same schemes to encode the characters. Unfortunately the ICQ protocol doesn't do a very good job of that. We are aware of the issue, but it will probably be a while before we're able to improve it.

How secure is Meebo from hackers
