Meebo support pages have a new home!

Login Page

When you visit meebo, you will first see the meebo login page, similar to the one below.


Meebo account login frame

  • Use this frame to log into meebo using your meebo account
  • Click on Sign On within the frame to sign in after entering your account info
  • If you don't have a meebo account, click on Sign up within the frame.


IM network login frame

  • Use this frame to log into your IM network(s) via meebo without a meebo account
  • Click on Sign On within the frame to sign in after entering your IM account info
  • To sign on to more than one IM networks, enter the account info for the networks, then click Sign On
  • If you don't have an IM account, you first have to create that account through the IM provider. Here are the links for each:

More networks

  • Currently we support AIM, Yahoo, MSN, GTalk, ICQ and Jabber
  • Click on more networks if you don't see all the network logins displayed


Language options

  • Select one of the available languages from the dropdown menu to change the language interface


Meebo Page

After logging into meebo, you will see your meebo page, similar to the one below.

Buddy icon (see image above for location)

  • The buddy icon is the image your buddies will see when they are chatting with you
  • To change the image, click on the icon and select an image or upload your own by selecting Custom Icon


Account status area (see image above for location)

  • This displays all the IM network accounts that you have added to your meebo account
  • The network account will be grayed out if you are not connected to that network
  • Click on the individual network account to Sign off the individual connection or (if option available for the network) Set display name and Set Profile)
  • If you didn't sign on using a meebo account, you will not see the meebo account (first account on the list)


Accounts (see image above for location)

  • Click on it to manage your IM network accounts through your meebo account
  • Add/Remove an IM network account to your meebo account
  • Option to Connect on startup and Sign on as invisible for each network account


Preferences (see image above for location)

  • Displays preferences available within meebo
  • Option to play sound when send and receive IM
  • Option to display emoticons in IM messages
  • Option to change skins/themes
  • Option to Save IM history to view later (need to be signed on using your meebo account)


Meebo me widget (see image above for location)

  • Click on it to create an embeddable IM chat window for your own web site

  • Displays icons and background themes from our sponsors


Rooms console (see image above for location)

  • Visit available rooms, search for rooms and create your own rooms


Buddy list (see image above for location)

  • Displays all the buddies from your network accounts that you've added to meebo
  • Use this buddy list to manage your buddies, including adding, remove, renaming, regrouping
  • Displays the status(away) message; click on the status message to change the status message
  • Buddy list can be popped-out of the browser by clicking on the pop-out icon on upper right corner of the buddy list
  • To IM a buddy, double-click on the buddy within the buddy list; an IM window will appear for you to chat with your buddy


Sign off button (see image above for location)

  • Click on the sign off button to sign off meebo (and all the associated network accounts)
  • It is important to sign off properly to avoid issues when signing back on later

Creating A Meebo Account

You don’t have to create a meebo account to use meebo. However, there are many benefits to creating a meebo account.

  • Ability to manage and access all your IM network accounts (Yahoo, MSN, AIM, GTalk, ICQ and Jabber) from one place
  • Automatic login to all your IM network accounts if you wish
  • Ability to save chat log history
  • Ability to transfer files
  • Ability to customize your meebo page with our themes and skins
  • Ability to create meebo me widgets
  • Ability to configure and moderate your own meebo rooms


To create a meebo account:

  1. Click on Sign Up! within the meebo login frame
  2. Create a meebo account! window will display
    Enter a meebo id you would like to use
    Enter and confirm your password for the new account
    Note: the system will check first to see if the username you are requesting exists already. If it does, you will get a pop-up asking you to pick another name and try again.
    Click Next when done
  3. Enter your name
    Enter your email address (this will only be used in case you forget your password)
    Enter Gender and Age info (optional)
    Click Create Meebo Account when done
  4. You will be signed onto your meebo page with the New Connection! window displayed for you to add one of your IM network account
    1. Choose a network from the list
    2. Enter your screen name for that network (note: for ICQ network, use your ICQ number; for msn use either your full hotmail or msn email address)
    3. Enter your password for that network
    4. (optional) Sign on as invisible (check this if you wish to sign on as invisible for this IM network account)
    5. Make sure Add to my meebo account is checked (default)
    6. Click Sign On

Your newly added IM network account will be displayed in the account status area on the left of your meebo page. Your buddies for that IM network account will appear on the buddy list if you had IM buddies on your list before you created your meebo account.

Note: If any of your buddies are not online, they will appear within the Offline group on your buddy list.

Creating an IM Account

In order to register an IM account within your meebo account, you first have to create that account through the IM provider. Here are the links for each:

Managing IM Network Accounts

Meebo supports Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ, Gtalk and Jabber IMing Networks. To chat with your buddies from one of these networks, you will need to add your own network account info from the respective network to your meebo account. For example, if you want to chat with your Yahoo buddies, you will need to add your own Yahoo account to your meebo account. You can add more than one account for a network.

Adding an IM Network Account

  1. On your meebo page, click on the accounts link on the top.
  2. A Welcome to Meebo! window will appear, with the Networks tab displayed
  3. Click on Add Account at the bottom of the window
  4. Add Account! window will display
    1. Choose a network from the list
    2. Enter your screen name for the network (note: for ICQ network, use your ICQ number; for MSN you will use either your full hotmail or MSN email address). Please note that sometimes after you click the box to type in your screen name it won't look like the cursor is there - it is. Just start typing after you click in that box.
    3. (optional) connect on startup (default is to connect on startup)
    4. (optional) sign on as invisible
    5. Click Add New Connection
      Your IM network will be displayed in the accounts tab.
  5. Click Save

Your account will appear in the accounts area of your meebo page. Your buddies for that network account will appear on the buddy list if you previously had buddies for that network account. If not, you would need to add them.
Note: If your buddy is offline, they will appear in the Offline group within the buddy list.


Removing an IM Network Account

If you no longer want an IM network on your meebo account, you can remove it from within your accounts.

  1. On your meebo page, click on the accounts link on the top.
  2. Welcome to Meebo! window will appear, with the Networks tab displayed
  3. Click Remove for the IM network account you wish to remove
    The account will disappear from the accounts list.
  4. Click Save

Note: If you still see the removed account on your meebo page, sign off and refresh the meebo page.

Managing Buddies

Adding Buddies

To add one of your IM network buddies to your buddy list, make sure that you have an account on the same network and that the IM network has been added to your meebo account. For example, if you want to add a buddy who is within the Yahoo network, make sure you have added your Yahoo account to meebo.

  1. From the buddy list, click on the add buddy icon
  2. Add Buddy! window will open
    1. Enter your buddy's name
    2. Select the network your buddy is from
      (NOTE: The listed networks are based on the IM network accounts you have added to your meebo account.)
    3. Choose the group to add your buddy to
    4. Click Add Buddy
  3. Your buddy will get a buddy request message. When your buddy accepts your request, you will get the following buddy request.

    Click Accept to allow your buddy to add you to their buddy list.

If your buddy is online, your buddy will be added to the group you specified.
If your buddy is offline (not logged in), your buddy will be added to the Offline group.


Removing Buddies

If you don't want to see a buddy on your buddy list anymore, you can remove them. There are 2 ways to remove your buddies. You can remove buddies using the remove buddy icon or the right click menu.

  1. Click on the buddy to highlight it
  2. Click on the delete buddy icon
  3. A message will pop up to confirm that you wish to remove the buddy, click Remove



To remove buddy using right click menu:

  1. Right click on the buddy, a little menu will appear
  1. Select Remove
  2. A message will pop up to confirm that you wish to remove the buddy, click Remove


Renaming Buddies

You can change your buddies' screen names to something more recognizable if their account name is a little cryptic.

  1. Right click on the buddy you want to rename, a little menu will appear
  2. Select Rename buddy
  3. Enter a new name for your buddy in the text box, then hit enter on your keyboard when done


Blocking Buddies

If you don't want a buddy to be able to IM you any longer, you can block them.

  1. On your buddy list, right-click on the buddy you want to block
  2. A menu will pop-up - select Block Yourbuddiesname
  3. A message will pop up to confirm that you wish to block the buddy, click Block
  4. That buddy will now appear on your Offline group or be removed from your buddy list. This all depends on what network protocol your blocking your buddy from.
  5. If you want to remove the buddies that move to your offline contacts altogether from your buddy list, right-click on their name in the Offline group and select Remove Yourbuddiesname. A message will pop up to confirm that you wish to remove the buddy - click Remove.



Un-Blocking Buddies

If you see your blocked buddy within the offline group on your buddy list with a grayed blocked icon, you can unblock the buddy by right-clicking on his/her name and selecting ‘unblock’.

If you don’t see the blocked buddy within the offline group, unfortunately, currently, to unblock that buddy, you need to re-add him/her to your buddy list again. After they accept, you will see their name grayed out with a blocked icon (an o with a line across it to the left of their name). Just right click on the buddy and you will see option to unblock.

Grouping Buddies

When you add a buddy, you can specify which group to put your buddy into. If later you wish to reorganize your buddy groupings, it can be done easily.

  1. Click and drag the buddy into a different group


Note: You can do this while your buddy is offline as well. When your buddy gets online, your buddy will show up in the group you've moved them to.


Offline Buddies

Even with your buddies “offline”, you can still manage them while they are in the Offline group, including renaming them and viewing chat conversations that has taken place. (Note: You will be able to view chat logs only if you have enabled “Saved my IM history to view later” within your meebo preferences.) You can also see which group your offline buddies belong in and regroup them if you wish.

  1. Right click on the buddy in the Offline group, a little menu will appear with the functions you can perform


To see which group your offline buddy belongs in:

  1. Hover your mouse cursor over the buddy
  2. A tooltip will appear, displaying the group the buddy belongs in
  3. If you want to move the buddy to a different group, click and drag the offline buddy's name to the group you wish to move the buddy to. When your buddy logs on, your buddy will show up in the group you have moved them to.


Managing Groups

If you want to divide your buddy list into smaller groups, you can add new groups. If you reorganized your buddies and no longer need a group, you can remove the group.

To add a new group:

  1. Right click on any of buddy group header, a small menu will appear
    Select Add New Group
  2. Add Buddy Group! window will appear
    Enter a name for your new group, then click Add New Group


To remove a group:

  1. Right click on the buddy group header that you want to remove, a small menu will appear
    Select Remove Group
  2. Remove Buddy Group! window will appear
    NOTE: If you have buddies still within the group, the buddies will also be deleted! If you only want to remove the group but not your buddies, move your buddies to a different group before removing the group.
    Click on Remove if you want to remove the group and buddies within the group

Blocking Unsolicited IMs

Blocking Individuals

If you get IM from people you do not know, you can block them from IMing you again.

To block unsolicited IMs

  1. On the IM window, click on the block icon
  2. A confirmation message will appear, click OK to block the person

Note: Currently, there is no option to view a list of all the people you have blocked. If you do not know the buddy name you have blocked, there is no way to obtain that information.


Blocking Everyone Not On Your Buddy List

The Privacy feature enables you to block messages from users who are not on your buddy list.

To block messages from users not on your buddy list:

  1. Click on preferences on your meebo page.
  2. Choose IM Settings from the drop down menu
  3. a IM Setting box will appear.
  4. Check the box that says Only receive messages from friends
  5. Close the IM Setting box to save.

With the privacy option selected, you will only get IMs from buddies on your buddy list. You will still receive Buddy Request invitation.


Setting Away Messages

If you want to let your buddies know that you are busy or that you are away from your computer, you can easily change your status message. A list of predefined status messages are available, but you can also create your own custom list of messages.

To change your status message:

  • - Click on the current status message or status message drop-down arrow

  • - Click the drop down arrow next to Available to select the Away or Invisible option

Note: If you select Invisible, you may appear offline or busy to your buddies on some networks.

To enter a custome status message

  • Type your status message in the white box to the right of your Meebo buddy icon.

Note: This message will show accross all of your network IM's

Setting Yourself as Invisible

Setting yourself as invisible will make you appear offline or busy to your buddies. You can set yourself as invisible for all the IM networks all at once. You can also set yourself as invisible for individual IM network accounts.


Setting Yourself as Invisible for all IM networks

  • Click the drop down arrow next to Available to select the Away or Invisible option

Note: If you select Invisible, you may appear offline or busy to your buddies on some networks.

To make yourself visible again, change the status message to Available.

Setting Yourself as Invisible for an Individual IM Network

  1. Click on account on the top of your Meebo page.
  2. Check the sign on as invisible option for the network you wish to be invisible for
  3. Click Save
  4. For this change to take effect immediately, click Sign off at the bottom of the buddy list
  5. Click on reconnect on the reconnect page or go back to www.meebo.com to log in again


You should see (invisible) next to the IM network which you've checked sign on as invisible for, indicating that you're signed on, but you are invisible to others.

When you want to become visible for that network, just click on the status message at the top of the buddy list and select I'm available.

With the sign on as invisible option checked, you can become invisible for that particular network again by clicking on that network account on your meebo page and selecting sign off. Then click on the account again to sign on.


Within the Meebo preferences, there are 5 feature settings available: appearances, im settings, account settings , networks and meebo me widget
Note: These features are customizable to users who are logged into meebo with their meebo account.

Appearances

To change your background

  1. Click preferences on your meebo page and choose appearances from the drop down menu.
  2. Choose a background from the appearances box by selecting one of the following options from the drop down menu. MyRecent, Featured, meebo, Movies, Music, shows, Tech or Games
  3. Click an image and close the box to save
  4. To change this image, simply select another
  5. To clear an image, simply click clear image
  6. To choose a color over a background image, simply clear the image and choose from the color list provided.


IM Settings

To display your IM Settings:

  1. Click on preferences on your meebo page and choose IM Settings from the drop down menu
  2. Here you can set the following options by checking/un-checking the box to the left. Sound, IM History, Privacy and Emoticons
  1. Sound option for sending and receiving IM.
  2. IM History option to save or not save your chat log history.
  3. privacy option to receive messages from friends already on your buddy list.
  4. emoticons option to choose if you'd like to view as text or as emoticon.


Account Settings

To change/update your Meebo password and email address: To update your email address:

  1. Enter your new email address in the box where your currently registered email is displayed.

To change your password

  1. Enter a new password, confirm the new password and enter your current password
  2. Click submit


Networks

To add or remove IM networks to your meebo account:

  1. Instructions to add and remove and IM network are listed above.


Meebo me Widget

This option will allow you to edit or create a new meebo me widget.

Signing Off

It is important to sign off meebo properly. You may experience problems logging back into certain IM accounts if you just close your meebo browser session.

If you are signed on to several IM network accounts, and want to sign off of one of the IM network while still connected to the others, you can easily do so.

Signing off Meebo

To sign off meebo (and all IM Networks):

  1. Click on the Sign Off button located above your Meebo networks to the right of your status message

Signing off an IM Network

To sign off an individual IM network:

  1. From the accounts area, click on the IM network you wish to log off of
  2. Click on Sign Off

Note: While still logged on to meebo, if you wish to sign back on to the IM network, click on the IM network account and select Sign On.
